Ashlie Smith instructs physical science at Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School for Girls located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She uses space science to encourage her students to dream big and cites inspiring young girls to develop an interest in STEM and consider STEM careers as driving passions. In 2016, Smith was honored to present a TEDx talk titled "Inspiring the Astronauts of Tomorrow." She was the recipient of the prestigious 2017 Alan Shepard Technology in Education Award presented by NASA, Astronaut Memorial Foundation, and Space Foundation. Just recently, she was recognized by the International Space Station US National Laboratory as their 2019 Exemplary Educator. This is Smith's fifth-year facilitating a Cubes in Space program at her school. Her students have developed and launched 23 experiments to space. Because of her active role within the program, she was awarded the Outstanding Educator Award at the 2019 Rocketfest at NASA Wallops Flight Facility. For the past two summers, Smith has taken her passion for space science to China and taught a 10-day workshop for middle-school-aged students on the International Space Station and Mars. She is thrilled to share her passion for space with like-minded Michigan educators.
